British-Swiss and British-Liechtenstein connections, which go back many centuries, are broadly based and deeply rooted. That is particularly true of the economy. Britain played a leading role a century and more ago in establishing the tourist industry in this part of Europe and today Switzerland is one of the major investors in the UK, with an estimated 1,200 companies active operating in Britain.
It is also true, however, in many other areas of activity, where the countries, despite belonging to different frameworks of co-operation, share common outlooks and common views. It is the role of the Embassy, and of the Ambassador, to develop these links further and to ensure a continuing high profile for British products, ideas, culture and ways of thinking. I very much look forward to being deeply involved with all aspects of that work while I am in Berne.
