Help for British nationals

The pages in this channel of the Embassy website provide information and advice for British nationals who are resident in or visiting Switzerland.  It covers the emergency help and routine consular services provided by the Embassy’s Consular Section in Berne.

You will be able to find out what to do if you are a victim of crime, if you need a lawyer or medical assistance from a doctor or in a hospital.  You will also find information on the following routine services or issues:

  • to register a birth, marriage or death
  • legalise a document
  • registering your contact details with us if you wish to do so
  • Travel insurance
  • Travel health
  • Travel money
  • Travellers Checklist

Please note:

In line with the British Government’s quest to ensure good service delivery with efficient use of resources, we have centralised consular services in Switzerland so that they are all now delivered by the professional consular staff at the British Embassy in Berne. Alongside the restructuring of our consular services, we have reviewed our network of Honorary Consuls, taking into account Switzerland's excellent transport network and modern communications. Our purpose in doing this is to comply with the wishes of the Swiss Government, and to have a network which best meets our consular delivery mandate. As a consequence, we have closed the Honorary Consul network in Switzerland with effect from 01 April 2011. All consular enquiries should be directed to the British Embassy in Berne, Tel: 031 359 7700.

Thank you.
